@  Windrider Shiva : (26 May 2013 - 04:56 AM) Actually, not the manuals. That company has different guidelines, but only for console terminology. That's it. Also applies to in-game instructions, but the difference is so minor that honestly, it's sometimes overlooked by the editor.
@  Anesor : (26 May 2013 - 04:55 AM) ouch, sounds like you need to have 2 caps for which flavor you want
@  Windrider Shiva : (26 May 2013 - 04:55 AM) The 1% applies to a *single* company, and that's only in manuals.
@  Windrider Shiva : (26 May 2013 - 04:54 AM) The French market is bigger than the Quebecer market. I localize video games, and 99% of the work I do, I do it for a foreign market.
@  Windrider Shiva : (26 May 2013 - 04:54 AM) That's the thing; we're a minority... even for our own language.
@  Anesor : (26 May 2013 - 04:52 AM) I would think it shold be that hard to translate for just quebec as subtitles. Better to get the spirit and humor intact
@  Anesor : (26 May 2013 - 04:51 AM) the list of old shows and movies remade where the new one has lost what made the original great
@  Windrider Shiva : (26 May 2013 - 04:50 AM) That's why I have such a hard time to watch TV shows localized in France - maybe over there, it keeps up with the spirit of things. But even if we speak the same language, there ARE differences. I can't relate to some of their stuff. I'll comply, because it's my line of work and I'm given guidelines. But if I was given a choice, there's some things I'd do differently.
@  Anesor : (26 May 2013 - 04:50 AM) At first I like the Mission Impossible movies, but for the second one I relized it was just another explosion/boom and not the conjobs and trickery that was the hallmark of the original show
@  Anesor : (26 May 2013 - 04:48 AM) so many movies or remakes think using the name of the original is enough, but the spirit is important too
@  Anesor : (26 May 2013 - 04:47 AM) that's an imprtant thing is that producers mUST keep the spirit of the source, whether redux or translation.
@  Windrider Shiva : (26 May 2013 - 04:46 AM) They changed the jokes to make them reflect what's going on here, but they kept something a lot of translations and localization companies forget: they kept the SPIRIT of the series.
@  Windrider Shiva : (26 May 2013 - 04:45 AM) I'll take an example of a show that's well done, localization-wise (in Quebec anyways): The Simpsons. Yes, they changed the locale. No, they didn't mess everything up. Smithers remains Smithers... and it fits the lcoale. Even Moleman keeps his name... and it just fits.
@  Anesor : (26 May 2013 - 04:45 AM) very few things end up as important for identity as your name
@  Anesor : (26 May 2013 - 04:44 AM) uggh, If someone is to name their kid Hujet, that's their name, even if it's strange to you, you can't change it. At best if you can't say it when speaking with them without mangling it, use anickname
@  Anesor : (26 May 2013 - 04:41 AM) one real book brought me to a stop, as they had gaslights pervading london in 1822, when Paris had the first large installation in 1825....
@  Windrider Shiva : (26 May 2013 - 04:41 AM) It is here too, a lot more than Eivind. But the character, at base, was not French. He was Norwegian and that was the name given to him. They changed it to make it easier to understand... per the standards in France.
@  Windrider Shiva : (26 May 2013 - 04:40 AM) Oops. Hit enter a little too early.
@  Anesor : (26 May 2013 - 04:40 AM) Ivan is poular here
