@  Anesor : (26 May 2013 - 04:40 AM) Ivan is poular here
@  Windrider Shiva : (26 May 2013 - 04:40 AM) That
@  Anesor : (26 May 2013 - 04:39 AM) well this is the same problem when a writer is writing a semi medieval fantasy and has someone 'going ballistic' or being a 'loose cannon'  The one subgenre I used to read a lot, regency romances, it's plain the writer is writing the culture as if today's sports and crazes were present in regency
@  Windrider Shiva : (26 May 2013 - 04:38 AM) They are cognates... but "Yvan" (FR, Ee-vahn) does NOT fit in a Norwegian show (Eivind was the name.)
@  Anesor : (26 May 2013 - 04:37 AM) the trouble is, are they cognates or just sort of close? John-Juan
@  Windrider Shiva : (26 May 2013 - 04:37 AM) Gotta keep the locale in mind.
@  Windrider Shiva : (26 May 2013 - 04:36 AM) Yes, but I was watching a Norwegian show.
@  Windrider Shiva : (26 May 2013 - 04:36 AM) It tears away from the locale.
@  Anesor : (26 May 2013 - 04:35 AM) Else here would be said as Elsa...
@  Anesor : (26 May 2013 - 04:34 AM) though if it's almost exactly the same, maybe not so much
@  Windrider Shiva : (26 May 2013 - 04:34 AM) I was watching a Norwegian TV movie and they had translated the names. It was SO annoying. One of the women was named "Else" in Norwegian, but it was *said* as "Elsa". "Arne" (NW) became "Arnaud" (FR). Worse when the name is *DISPLAYED* in the movie, on paper... but pronounced another way.
@  Anesor : (26 May 2013 - 04:33 AM) yeah. not something I realized before, but it's silly
@  Windrider Shiva : (26 May 2013 - 04:32 AM) I'm an auditive person. I don't mind accents, and I don't mind different languages... but I draw the line at translating names.
@  Anesor : (26 May 2013 - 04:32 AM) names are usually important and should be the last thing to change in translations
@  Anesor : (26 May 2013 - 04:31 AM) I certainly don't expect a story in Italy to have Sanchos and Yukis
@  Anesor : (26 May 2013 - 04:30 AM) ewwww
@  Anesor : (26 May 2013 - 04:30 AM) we like subtitles here, because my older mother can't always hear dialogue. this way we don't miss what is happening (assuming no typos)
@  Windrider Shiva : (26 May 2013 - 04:29 AM) Also because they tend to localize every single thing, things that lose meanings over translations... like names. I'm watching a Swedish show, I expect Swedish names and locales...
@  Anesor : (26 May 2013 - 04:29 AM) ah, all our lower tier are najor networks.  PBS is the only educational channel and they don't have much history anymore or drama
@  Windrider Shiva : (26 May 2013 - 04:28 AM) (Which, as a Quebecer, is fucking annoying; highly different accents and expressions. I'd rather have those subbed than dubbed, but our population doesn't seem to like subbed things too much.)
